It was a frosty morning late September. I was on a piece of property that I had never hunted before, but knew there were good deer there. I was excited to sit not knowing what to expect. The morning started off slow without seeing any deer for the first hour of light. The weather report called for a slight North breeze which was perfect for my stand position. As the morning went on I noticed that the wind had picked up from the South. It wasn't a lot of wind, but I thought for sure it was enough to ruin my hunt. I decided to stay even without the perfect wind. I figured I was there so I might as well see what happens. It wasn't my only hunting spot for the season so if I messed it up I always had other spots to try and ambush a bruiser. There hadn't been any movement up to that point, so I grabbed the horns and tickled the tines. It wasn't long before I had this deer standing broadside at 15 yards. I wish I had a great story about how I saw him walking across the field all bristled up, but the truth is I don't. The first time I saw the buck he was at 30 yards and he was on a string looking for a fight. A couple seconds later he was perfectly broadside right in my shooting lane. I didn't have hardly any time to evaluate whether to take this deer or let him pass, so I let my arrow fly. I made a good shot and I knew he wasn't going far. I left my stand and went back to the farm house to figure out how I going to get this deer home. As luck would have it I was hunting alone that morning and my dad was four hours away at my sisters house. It doesn't seem like that big of a problem except for I drive a Honda Civic. I didn't have a pickup anywhere close to load my deer up and take it to my house, which is over an hour away. Luckily my father-in-law wasn't busy that day and he helped me get the deer back to my house. This buck gross scored 123 which is my biggest to date. I am already anxious for next season because I shot this deer on my second hunt of the season. I logged a total of two and a half hours in a tree on this new property, and I shot the only deer I saw. I talked to the landowner after I shot this buck and he said the is a really nice 10 point around. Maybe next year he'll be mine.
